GMC’s Inline 6 Engines !
New I-Series Economy Models
In 1964 GMC offered the Chevrolet 230 inline six engine, it brought economy, efficiency & low
initial cost to the line duty trucking industry. The time-proved 6-cylinder engine is a product
of GMC Truck & Coach Division’s 50 years of truck engine design experience combined with the
vast resources of General Motors Research & Testing Laboratories. These engines are the same
used in Chevrolet Trucks & GMC Handi-vans. Also these are the same engine used in Canadian
Chevy & GMC trucks. But what was the real reason GMC Used these engines in their trucks?

Here it is, straight form the “Confidential Information For GMC Salesman Only” book.
Light-duty trucks with an in-line six cylinder engine, known as the “I-Series”, constitute an
important expansion of the 1964 truck line. These new models give you a two-way approach toward
additional sale in the light-dut market:
1. You now have light-duty models that are priced to compete with other leading makes, and
2. With additional floor traffic created by interent in a new, lower-priced GMC, you should
increase your sales of V6 powered light truck by stepping up some prospects, the same as
competition moves then up from in-line six to V8. And remember, your V6 is exclusive
only GMC has it!

The Chevrolet 250 L6 engines also offered in GMC Trucks, this one in 1966 it both the States
& Canada. Here is a list of Inline Six Cylinder Engines used in GMC Trucks in the 1960s:
194 cid, 235 cid, 250 cid, 261 cid, 270 cid, 302 cid.
There was also a 153 cid inline four used in the Handi-Van.
